For more than 40 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November. The Great American Smokeout supports tobacco users in committing to healthy, tobacco-free lives – not just for a day, but year round. Great American Smokeout activities provide an opportunity for individuals, college campuses, community groups, businesses, health care providers, and others to encourage people to use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and initiate a tobacco quit plan on the day of the event . Great American Smokeout also challenges people to stop using tobacco and helps people learn about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and transition from in-person to virtual learning and events, CYAN will be creating materials for social media and provide ideas for virtual activities hosted by or in partnership with colleges and universities.
The Great American Smokeout is traditionally held on the third Thursday of November; however, your campus might choose to plan the event on a different day to accommodate your campus calendar. Great American Smokeout is on November 19, 2020.
