Youth Quest 2017
Youth Quest is an annual event hosted by CYAN to celebrate and promote youth advocacy in tobacco control. Youth Quest provides an opportunity for youth advocates to demonstrate their commitment to a tobacco-free California, learn about current tobacco control efforts, and build their advocacy skills by sharing their local work with legislators.
Youth Quest is scheduled for March 13, 2017. The event will be held in Sacramento, CA from 8:00am – 2:00pm. A tentative schedule is available here. The theme of the 2017 event is “Healthy You(th): Advocating for a Tobacco-Free California.” The focus of the youth training, press conference, and meetings with legislators will be how tobacco impacts youth with an emphasis on flavored products and tobacco in the retail environment. Additionally, the event will emphasize the power of youth to advocate for change.
This year, the maximum number of participants is 250 (youth and adult partners). Youth Quest 2017 is geared towards high school-age students.
A major component of this year’s event will be legislative visits. All participants are required to visit a legislator to provide information and education on local, community-based tobacco-free activities. CYAN will schedule all legislative visits. Due to the number of individuals who can fit in legislative offices, a local project may bring no more than 10 youth to each visit.
Application and Registration
Due to a cap of 250 attendees, CYAN is conducting a two-phase registration process to ensure as many local projects can attend Youth Quest as possible. During the first phase, projects will complete an online application and provide information on how many youth and adult participants they anticipate bringing to Youth Quest, what tobacco-related activities youth have been involved in at the local level, and to identify the legislators that youth and their adult partners want to visit. CYAN will review applications to determine how many advocates from each organization may attend. When notified, agencies will then be able to register for the event. The application period is currently open and will close December 9, 2016. No applications will be accepted after December 9th unless space permits.
CYAN will review all applications and inform organizations of the number of youth and adults they can bring to the event by January 4, 2017. At that time, organizations can register for the event. Registration will close on January 27, 2017.
