CYAN started addressing military tobacco use in 2006 in direct response to the results of a State of California commissioned study on tobacco use prevalence by active duty service members. The California Active Duty Tobacco Use Survey-2004 showed that members of the United States Armed Forces living in California had tobacco use rates at twice that of the civilian adult population within the state.
To address this reality, Project UNIFORM (Undoing Nicotine Influence From Our Respected Military) was established. Project UNIFORM’s mission is to create a collaborative bridge between military tobacco cessation programs and services offered by the state of California as a means to decrease the number of service members who use tobacco. Project UNIFORM staff works throughout the state to: provide culturally appropriate cessation information and training to existing military cessation programs on California military installations; collaborate with military support networks to promote cessation services; and educate tobacco control professionals to the culture and existing services within the Armed Forces of the United States. Please visit the Project UNIFORM website for military-specific news, resources, materials, and information.
